Embroidery Tech FAQ

What determines the embroidery price?

Unlike screen printing which is priced by color count, embroidery is priced by "stitch count." The more dense and large the design, the longer the machine takes to run, increasing the cost.

What is a "Digitizing Fee"?

Digitizing is the process of converting your artwork into a stitch file (.DST/.EMB). It's a one-time technical setup fee that ensures the thread paths are optimized for industrial machines.

Why does small text look blurry in embroidery?

Physical thread has thickness. At HoodieOEM, we recommend a minimum text height of 5mm. Anything smaller risks the "loops" closing up, resulting in unreadable branding.

Can you embroider over seams?

We advise against it. Embroidering over heavy seams can break needles and cause thread bunching. For best results, place logos at least 1cm away from any seam line.

Does thread color count affect price?

Generally, no. Most industrial machines (like our Tajima units) carry 12-15 needles. As long as your design is within this range, the price is based on stitches, not colors.

Precision Branding: The Science of Embroidery Stitch Counts in Streetwear Manufacturing

In the world of high-end hoodie manufacturing, embroidery remains the undisputed king of durability and perceived value. However, for many emerging streetwear brands, the pricing of embroidery feels like a “black box.” At HoodieOEM, we believe that transparency in technical data leads to better design decisions.

Understanding the stitch count—the total number of individual needle penetrations required to complete a design—is the key to mastering your production budget.

1. The “Stitch Count” Logic vs. Screen Printing

Traditional screen printing is restricted by the number of colors. Embroidery, conversely, is indifferent to color quantity (within a standard 12-15 color machine limit) but is hypersensitive to density and area.

A small, solid-fill circle may require significantly more stitches than a large, hollow outline. This is because “fill stitches” (Satin or Tatami) must overlap slightly to ensure the fabric underneath doesn’t show through. When you use our Embroidery Stitch Count Estimator, you are calculating the “thread real estate” your brand occupies on the garment.

2. Factors That Inflate Your Stitch Count

Not all logos are created equal. In our factory’s digitizing department, we categorize designs into three tiers:

  • Low Density (Simple Text/Outlines): These designs use the fabric as part of the background. They are cost-effective and create a “light” feel on the hoodie.

  • Medium Density (Standard Corporate/Brand Logos): Most retail logos fall here. They feature solid text with a mix of satin stitches for borders.

  • High Density (Solid Fill Badges): These are the “heavy hitters.” Think of 3D puff embroidery or military-style patches. These designs can easily exceed 50,000 stitches, adding significant weight and “heft” to the chest or back of a hoodie.

3. The Technical Constraint: Minimums and Fabric Pull

As a specialized OEM, we often warn clients about the “Fabric Pull” phenomenon. Embroidery physically pulls the fabric toward the center of the design.

  • The Solution: On heavy fleece (350+ GSM), we can use higher stitch densities because the fabric is stable.

  • The Risk: If you put a high-stitch-count badge on a thin summer jersey, the fabric will pucker and wrinkle around the logo. This is why we align our technical tools with our fabric recommendations.

4. Digitizing: The Bridge from Pixels to Thread

The most critical step in embroidery isn’t the sewing—it’s the Digitizing. A poorly digitized file might have 10,000 “junk stitches” that don’t add to the visual quality but do add to your bill.

At HoodieOEM, our digitizers focus on Path Optimization. By reducing unnecessary “jump stitches” and optimizing the “underlay,” we can often reduce a client’s stitch count by 10-15% without sacrificing the premium look. This technical efficiency is what separates a specialized manufacturer from a generalist shop.

5. Why Every Brand Needs an Estimator

A “surprise” embroidery bill can kill a project’s margins. By using our estimator during the design phase, you can adjust your logo size by just 1cm to fit into a lower pricing tier. This data-driven design approach ensures that your retail price remains competitive while your quality remains “top-tier.”
