Can DTG print on 100% polyester hoodies?

Not recommended. DTG inks are water-based and bond best with natural fibers. On high-polyester hoodies, the ink will fade or peel after 2-3 washes. Use Screen Printing or Sublimation for poly-blends.

Is Screen Printing more durable than DTG?

Traditionally, yes. Screen printing uses plastisol or water-based inks cured at high heat, which can last for years. Modern industrial DTG (Kornit machines) is very durable but still slightly less resistant to harsh bleaching than screen printing.

Why is the setup fee high for Screen Printing?

Every color requires a separate physical screen mesh and film positive. If you have a 6-color logo, the factory must prepare 6 screens, which is why small orders are expensive for this method.

Can DTG do neon or metallic colors?

No. DTG uses CMYK ink sets which cannot replicate true metallic gold or neon colors. For those special finishes, Screen Printing with specialty inks is the only option.

What is 'Puff' printing?

Puff printing is a screen printing technique where a foaming agent is added to the ink, causing it to expand and rise off the fabric when heated. This is currently not possible with standard DTG.

Screen Printing vs. DTG: The Strategic Production Choice for Hoodie Brands

In the hyper-competitive world of streetwear, the “vibe” of your brand is often determined by the texture of your print. But beyond aesthetics, there lies a complex web of production logic that can either make or break your profit margins. As a specialized HoodieOEM partner, we often find that the choice between Screen Printing and Direct-to-Garment (DTG) is the most critical technical decision a brand will make.

1. The Industrial Powerhouse: Screen Printing

Screen printing is the traditional gold standard for bulk manufacturing. It involves pushing ink through a woven mesh stenciled with your design.

  • The Scalability Factor: Because the physical screen (setup) is the most expensive part, the per-unit cost drops dramatically as volume increases. For a bulk order of 100+ hoodies with a 1-2 color logo, screen printing is unbeatable in price.

  • The Specialty Edge: If your brand identity relies on Puff Inks, Glow-in-the-dark, or High-Density 3D textures, screen printing is your only option. It allows for a thicker “ink deposit” that digital machines simply cannot replicate.

2. The Digital Disruptor: Direct-to-Garment (DTG)

DTG works much like your office inkjet printer, but for fabric. It sprays tiny droplets of specialized aqueous ink directly onto the hoodie fibers.

  • The “No-Limit” Color Palette: If your design is a high-resolution photograph or a complex gradient with 50 different shades, DTG handles it in a single pass.

  • The Low-MOQ Savior: Since there are no screens to burn, DTG is the perfect solution for samples, limited “drops,” or personalized merchandise. At HoodieOEM, we use DTG to help brands test new designs without committing to thousands of dollars in stock.

3. The Fabric Constraint: Cotton is King

This is where many “designers” fail. DTG inks are chemically formulated to bind with cellulose fibers (Cotton).

  • The 70/30 Rule: For a premium DTG result, the hoodie surface should be at least 70% cotton. On high-polyester blends, the ink “migrates,” leading to a dull, washed-out look.

  • The Screen Printing Flexibility: Screen printing with plastisol inks can bond to almost any surface, including high-poly sports fleece, making it the more versatile choice for performance-wear hoodies.

4. Durability: A Modern Comparison

A common myth is that DTG washes off. While early 2010s DTG technology was prone to fading, modern industrial machines (like the Kornit systems we use at HoodieOEM) produce prints that can withstand 50+ washes if cared for correctly.

However, Screen Printing still holds the trophy for “extreme durability.” The ink actually sits on top of the fabric (or is discharged into it), creating a bond that often outlasts the garment itself. For “workwear” style hoodies, screen printing remains the technical recommendation.

5. How to Use the Decision Matrix

Our Hoodie Screen Printing vs. DTG Decision Matrix is built on real factory pricing data. By inputting your order quantity and color count, you aren’t just getting an opinion—you’re getting an algorithmic production recommendation.

  • Pro Tip: If your order is 48 pieces with 6 colors, our matrix will likely suggest DTG. If you reduce that logo to 2 colors and increase the quantity to 60, Screen Printing will win on price. This is Data-Driven Sourcing in action.

At HoodieOEM, we offer both technologies under one roof. Our goal is to ensure your brand’s technical specifications align with your commercial goals. Choose the right “brush” for your masterpiece, and let’s build something iconic.
